During the hottest days from May 1 to October 31, when hundreds of thousands of air conditioners are operating at the same time, PG&E will send a signal to your SmartAC device to use slightly less power than normal. This small change in temperature will alleviate the strain on California’s electrical system and reduce the likelihood of an inconvenient power interruption.

The SmartAC program manages household energy use with two free device options.
The SmartAC Switch
- Installed on or near the outside of your air conditioning unit.
- Installation will typically not require an appointment.
- Upon activation, your air conditioner will cycle using slightly less power than normal for no more than one to six hours in a day.
The SmartAC Thermostat
- A programmable thermostat ($300 value including installation) that replaces your current thermostat.

The SmartAC program works with standard central air conditioners and heat pumps. Evaporative coolers or window and wall units are not eligible for the program.

If you need to end your participation in the SmartAC program, call us at 1-866-908-4916 and we will disable your SmartAC device. If you ever decide to join the SmartAC program again, just call us to re-activate your SmartAC device.
